This was my first comedy. I knew both of the actors very well and had them in mind while writing the scene, which made developing the gags a lot easier. Here we have two typical clown figures: The bossy White Clown and August – the fool that sabotages the former’s authority.
I have always been fascinated by theatre’s ability to simultaneously reveal and uphold illusions – something that is rarely done in film. Since we were working in a studio setting where a fantasy is being created anyways, I thought I’d give it a try. And it worked: One character pulls the other up to the ceiling and the image holds, although the wires are clearly visible.
